About Our Founder

After completing his PhD at the Indian Institute of Science in 1971, Dr Hongasandra Rama Rao Nagendra moved to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Centre in the USA, where he served as Post-Doctoral Research Associate. He returned to Vivekananda Kendra in 1975 to pursue human engineering, as opposed to mechanical engineering.

Dr H.R. Nagendra found that modern science addresses the physical aspects of reality, but creation has many subtle and causal dimensions that the ancient Seers of India had fathomed, realized, documented and tested over time for their usefulness. With this realization, he jumped into the wisdom contained in Upanishads of yoga and spiritual lore. He was fascinated by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda, who expressed this great wisdom in modern terminology and urged his followers to combine the best of the West with the best of the East.

Later, Dr Nagendra was asked by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to bring the wisdom of Yoga to University campuses and the Kendra had 9 campuses in which Yoga centers were established. The success story continued as the UGC accorded a deemed-to-be University status in 2002 to S-VYASA, and Dr. Nagendra became the first Vice Chancellor. He has remained the guiding force behind the VYASA movement and has been appointed the Chancellor of the university, effective from 2014.

Dr. H.R. Nagendra

Dr. Nagendra has been instrumental in coordinating the efforts of several key personnel to develop a 100-acre campus of scenic beauty, 32 kilometers from Bangalore and 5 kilometres from Bannerghatta-Jigni-Anekal National Highway. The campus is the development Headquarters of VYASA and S-VYASA, with research as its primary aim.

The Campus, Prashanti, houses a 250-bed research center called Arogyadhama. This internationally acclaimed facility conducts leading-edge research on yoga and holistic health care. The treatment facility, Surabhi, offers Naturopathy and Ayurveda treatments and promotes positive health. Prashanti also houses an intensive, holistic 30-bed cancer care center.
