Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana, or VYASA, is a not-for-profit society registered under the Societies Registration Act 1956.
VYASA’s vision has always been to make yoga a socially relevant science by merging the best of the East (ancient wisdom) with the best of the West (scientific research).
With research (Anusandhana) as the main objective, VYASA opened the first exclusive Yoga Therapy Hospital, a holistic healing center, in 1978. Its first research publication on the use of yoga therapy in the management of bronchial asthma, published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), was one of the cornerstones of evidence-based yoga therapy worldwide. Recognized as a scientific and industrial research organization by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India, with special income tax exemption status under Section 35 I (ii) for research funding, VYASA has been the preeminent contributor to the world’s scientific literature on yoga, with over 350 publications.
To date, VYASA has developed more than 18 disease-specific yoga therapy modules, published books and DVDs, and conducted over 20 international conferences. VYASA’s activities currently spread across 24 countries.
The original founders of VYASA were a scientist from NASA, Dr. H.R. Nagendra, and a conventional medical practitioner, Dr. Nagaratna R. Over the years since then, VYASA is proud to have trained and encouraged many renowned yoga researchers, yoga therapy professionals, yoga Instructors and integrative medicine practitioners.
